I realize this isn’t meant to be scientific but after 13,000 notes, I feel moved to say: the dumbest thing about this is that you could easily rotate the four terms in just about any sequence and nobody could ever reasonably disagree. Disregarding the terms’ actual etymologies (which most people have done for decades, anyway), these terms are now and have always been rather interchangeable. To maintain that there’s any real distinction would be akin to assigning “dick”, “prick”, “asshole”, and “fucker” to a Venn diagram of insults; the differences cannot be logically articulated.
Other than “I saw a thing on Tumblr”, there’s no empirical reasoning to believe that calling someone a “dweeb” means you are asserting that they are less obsessive than the person you just called a “dork”. Nor could you ever confidently say you called someone a “geek” because while he/she was intelligent and obsessive, you noticed that he/she was more socially capable than a comparable nerd.
So let’s… let’s drop the charade.
